Veterans Fighting Fascism

Going on Offense for Democracy

This Veterans Day, Common Defense and Task Force Butler are proud to announce a powerful new partnership to uphold democratic values and counter rising authoritarianism in the wake of Donald Trump’s re-election. This alliance brings together two veteran-led organizations committed to safeguarding justice and protecting communities from extremist violence as concerns grow over the direction of our nation’s future.

Prior to the election, Generals Mattis, Milley, and Kelly—who each served at the highest levels of Trump’s first administration—have issued grave warnings, describing Trump’s behavior as “fascist” and cautioning that his actions threaten the very fabric of democracy. As veterans and protectors of the Constitution, both Common Defense and Task Force Butler agree with their assessment and are responding with a fortified commitment to defend democratic principles.

Help Us Fight for Democracy and American Values

Many Veterans felt helpless, hopeless, and ashamed as they watched the democracy that they fought for attacked from within by radicalized Veterans carrying American flags and symbols of military service on January 6, 2021.

We give these Veterans the opportunity to fight back, to work to reclaim the meaning of patriotism, and to reshape the role Veterans play in America’s political landscape.

We help veterans impose social and economic costs on extremist groups, within the bounds of the law, where our government is now failing to do so.

We are American Veterans who Hunt Neo-Nazis.

Task Force Butler Institute

We are a 501c3 nonprofit which trains veterans in research and operations to counter extremism, teaching the skills and context necessary to keep veterans and their communities safe as they gather intelligence on dangerous individuals and organizations.

Domestic extremist organizations are growing in membership, activity levels, and sophistication — and they aren’t being met with meaningful and effective opposition.

Resistance against Fascism must be professionalized, persistent, and overwhelming, not haphazard and without competent and inspiring leadership.

Now is the time to invest in Going on Offense for Democracy!

Hold Extremists Accountable

For far too long neo-nazi, white supremacist, and fascist organizations have been able to terrorize vulnerable Americans and erode our democracy without paying a price.

We provide the resources and support necessary to ensure that those who want to destroy our pluralistic society pay for the damage that they’ve done to targeted minority groups and our democracy.

Whether it’s providing courtroom-ready evidence for legal accountability, or providing reports for activists to use in community education campaigns, we’re working to make sure that Americans have the information that they need to fight back.

Show Your Support

Are you a veteran who opposes fascism?

Or are you a civilian supporter?

Show the world that you’re with us by sporting our gear!

Whether it’s a casual t-shirt for a night out with friends or an office-friendly mug to put in the background of your virtual meetings, we’ve got what you need to show where you stand.

“My interest is, my one hobby is, maintaining a democracy. If you get these 500,000 soldiers advocating anything smelling of Fascism, I’m going to get 500,000 more and lick the hell out of you.”

— USMC Major General Smedley Butler, 1934

Founder and CEO

Kristofer Goldsmith is the founder and CEO of Task Force Butler. A former US Army sergeant, Kris has emerged as a leading expert on white supremacist and fascist street gangs and how these groups target American troops and veterans for recruitment. He has dedicated his post-military life to addressing these challenges.

Task Force Butler is a nonprofit organization with a mission to put fascist street gangs out of business. Going on offense for democracy, the organization accomplishes this through original intelligence gathering, collaborations with law enforcement and civilian authorities, specialized journalist trainings, and a robust media presence. Task Force Butler is the only group that merges interdiction, education, and media to address these unique threats to our society. Under Kristofer's leadership, Task Force Butler has garnered significant results in its first year. The organization's work helped successfully prosecute at least nine modern-day nazis — with dozens more awaiting trial — and file three lawsuits against Patriot Front and its founder, a group responsible for the vast majority of anti-Jewish incidents tracked by the ADL. As the threat landscape evolves, Kristofer continues to ramp up the organization's efforts, ensuring that the pillars of democracy remain unshaken and that veterans are safeguarded from extremist influences.

In addition to Task Force Butler, Kristofer founded High Ground Veterans Advocacy, a fellowship program that trains veterans to become policy advocates, and led the successful campaign to create the Forever GI Bill, which removed the expiration date of veterans' education benefits. Recognizing the importance of counteracting disinformation, he also launched Sparverius, LLC — a veteran-owned enterprise committed to detecting and disrupting disinformation and extremist campaigns. Kristofer holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science with Honors from Columbia University.
